Here’s How Litecoin overtakes Bitcoin, and Amazon is the Key

What if Amazon and Litecoin (LTC) paired up? It would change the crypto market forever.
Amazon as a Tech company and everything store, is perhaps the only thing Millennials trust more than investing in cryptocurrencies. We’ve now reached a point where Big Tech will race to adopt them and it could change the future of banking and payments.

KAKOA ADOPTING CRYPTO IS A HUGE SIGNAL

With Kakao, South Korean’s largest messaging and fintech platform getting into cryptocurrencies and Telegram approaching an ICO at lightspeed, Amazon and Facebook have to move fast to keep up. Kakao has market penetration rate of over 90 percent with a multi-app empire in South Korea, that’s like the WeChat (Tencent) of China.
With Bitcoin plummeting and the cryptocurrency market cap eerily at almost half of what it once was, it seems as if Bitcoin’s reign as a medium of exchange appears to be coming to an end. Litecoin is most likely to take its place.
While Ethereum and Ripple allow us to see the Blockchain come to life with laser-focused proprietary blockchains, hard forks and diversification means we are seeing a bifurcation of what cryptocurrencies could become. As companies like coinbase rapidly expand and Bitcoin’s price does not seem to be rebounding easily above $10,000, there’s a tension in the air.
Amazon for many analysts, still holds the key for being the platform in the best position to adopt their use in some form. Amazon after all has demonstrated foresight in tech with Alexa smart speakers, ebooks, kindle and convenience like same-day delivery. Litecoin is the more agile Bitcoin, without the weird karma, and it’s the cryptocurrency that makes the most sense for Amazon to adopt along with Stellar. Bitcoin is not scalable and as a first-move will not likely be ever more than a kind of digital gold. 2018 should therefore be the year for Ripple and Litecoin to both make significant progress.

LITECOIN WILL OVERTAKE BITCOIN SOONER THAN YOU THINK

Litecoin overtaking Bitcoin is now inevitable, and no longer a question of how, but just a matter of when.
Amazon adopting Litecoin would immediately legitimize cryptocurrency as a valid means of transactions. Bitcoin was born out of the ashes of 2008, and was the first cryptocurrency to be traded a full eight years ago in March 2010, and while it’s often credited with bringing blockchain technology into the spotlight it’s now widely understood more sophisticated cryptocurrencies are slowly untethering themselves from BTC’s volatility and as a speculative digital asset of value.

CRYPTOCURRENCIES SET TO BECOME PART OF CHAT-APPS

As more Technology companies and payment apps adopt crypto integrations, cryptocurrencies such as Litecoin have the most potential to start to have mainstream implications as a digital means of exchange and enter our lives as ubiquitous (if digital) forms of payment.
Litecoin among all the cryptocurrencies might have the most potential to become a simplistic form of digital exchange.

AMAZON IS LIKELY GEARING UP FOR CRYPTO INTEGRATION INTO ITS WALLET AND AMAZON PAY

Litecoin should stay in the conversation as being the cryptocurrency most likely to be picked up by Amazon. Adopting Litecoin would provide an added customer experience to Prime members and as Amazon has embarked on partnerships with Wall Street banks to open an alleged checking account with its branding, adopting an established cryptocurrency such as Litecoin could legitimize the future of the cryptocurrency market like never before.
Amazon could integrate Litecoin exchanges with QR codes just like WeChat made payments so common in China they ended the reign of cash.
With the advent of LitePay in 2018, this would be the right time for Amazon to adopt it on its platform in some form of beta. LitePay is basically a Litecoin payment system that became available in 41 countries on Monday, February 26, 2018.

LITE PAY MAKES LITECOIN MORE APPEALING TO RETAIL ADOPTION

LitePay is basically the proof of concept that without intervening transfer to fiat, cryptocurrencies could be adopted faster than we previously imagined they would. If smaller merchants start to adopt LitePay, Amazon could very well swoop in and either acquire Litecoin or fully integrate it into its own wallet. What if AmazonPay had a LitePay option? This would help it compete with the likes of WalmartPay and compete directly with Apple Pay and GooglePay. GooglePay is basically the new version of Android Pay and Google Wallet.
LitePay is basically a crypto to fiat intermediary that could protect tech companies who decide to adopt a cryptocurrency to add customer experiences and help onboard crypto enamored Millennials on to their platforms and services.
If Amazon doesn’t go the crypto route soon, there is some chance Facebook and others will.
However only Amazon’s adoption of a cryptocurrency or its own altcoin would truly legitimize the Crypto Singularity since the Bitcoin hype of 2017 has died down somewhat in the first half of 2018.

ASIA MORE HONEST ABOUT CRYPTO SINGULARITY

The Chinese central bank’s governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, in his recent press conference basically admitted cryptocurrency not only could , but will eventually overtake fiat currencies, in terms of usage and importance. That makes J.P. Morgan calling crypto a “risk factor” look pretty subdued. The Crypto price depression of early 2018 is due to regulation and a rise in fraud activities, but cannot last forever.
Amazon integrating the use of cryptocurrency payments into its platform seems almost inevitable given their rise in popularity and blockchain’s more significant manifestations.
The most simple, seamless, most secure and cheapest forms of exchange will win. Litecoin’s founder Charlie Lee last in 2017 has to quell rumors of Amazon integration once already. Litecoin obviously has many advantagesover Bitcoin ever being adopted, with nows appears low to nil. Litecoin is the silver Bitcoin, with a simpler algo and 4-times the lifetime cap with faster block gen. A typical bitcoin transaction takes longer than an hour to process, with fees of around $28, that’s just not going to fly on chat-apps and for digital exchanges.

LITECOIN MOST LIKELY TO BE INTEGRATED INTO AMAZON

In terms of processing times Litecoin can do around 56 per second. Litecoin also has implemented an upgrade to its blockchain known as Segregated Witness, or “SegWit” for short. This means Litecoin can now with SegWit added, handle more merchants and transactions, as well as improved processing speeds and lowered transaction fees.
Litecoin appears to have a clear path to becoming the go-to medium of exchange over time, and Amazon’s adoption of it would completely break open crypto into the Western psyche of retail transactions and utility. While Western audiences are well behind Chinese consumers in mobile commerce and mobile payments, Amazon needs to radically alter its payments to create differentiation between the fragmented payments and mobile payments market in the U.S. and Canada. Amazon adopting a some form of cryptocurrency seems highly probable. Where we stand now in 2018, Litecoin just makes the most sense.

How To Protect Your Cryptocurrency: Keep Your Bitcoin and Altcoins Safe

Related image
2017 has been a breakout year for cryptocurrency. Not only Bitcoin, but altcoins such as Ethereum,Dash and Litecoin have also seen amazing increases in value this year. However, this creation of wealth has left many people asking: How can I protect my cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrencies are decentralized, giving people the opportunity to take away the middleman: you are your own bank. However, this also means that you are responsible for protecting your cryptocurrency.
It takes understanding and responsibility to protect your cryptocurrency and to keep it secure. You don’t want someone to hack your machine and steal your valuable cryptocurrencies.
If this is too much pressure, services like Payza and online cryptocurrency exchanges can be used to hold and protect coins on your behalf. These companies take the responsibility of holding your Bitcoin and altcoins, making it less likely that your coins will one day be lost.
Here are some things to consider when securing your cryptocurrency:

Setting Up

Hacking and phishing attacks are among the biggest security threats to your cryptocurrencies, so you must set strong passwords for your wallets and all accounts that deal with cryptocurrencies.
Keep these tips in mind when setting up or using your cryptocurrency accounts:
  • Use different passwords for every account you use to limit any damage that can be done by hackers.
  • Use a unique email when opening accounts on each exchange and only use that email address for that specific exchange.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for your exchange accounts. This adds a software to your smartphone which adds extra security to your account. Without two-factor authentication, a hacker only needs your username and password to empty your balance.
  • Don’t store your wallets and passwords in the same place or an attacker can gain access to both your passwords and your wallet at the same time.
  • Never mention what exchange or wallet you use on social media or online forums. Any information you post online can be turned against you.
  • Maintain backups of your cryptocurrency wallets and recovery phrases to ensure your coins aren’t lost for good if something happens to your main device. External hard drives, USB sticks, and encrypted backup files can be used to secure your recovery options and programs like VeraCrypt can encrypt these sensitive files.

Difference Between Wallets & Exchanges

When dealing with cryptocurrencies you usually have to deal with private keys. Private keys are used to access your wallet and to authenticate transactions. If you lose access to your wallets, private keys can also help you recover them. A private key is unlikely to be hacked but it can be discovered in other ways, so the most important thing you can do is protect your private key by not sharing it.
When you control your private keys, you have full control over your cryptocurrency. This is the key feature of most wallets. However, securely handling a private key is a big responsibility and when your coins are kept in an exchange, these exchanges will hold your cryptocurrency for you.
Exchanges are made for, well, exchanging. You can use them to convert your cryptocurrency into other cryptocurrencies or into fiat. Because you don’t have as much control over coins held in an exchange, you may face withdrawal limits and processing delays when you are ready to move your coins. When using multiple exchanges, it’s a good idea to divide your cryptocurrency among them. Don’t keep all your cryptocurrency in one place. This will spread out your risk and makes it harder for someone to compromise all of your accounts.
While an exchange is better suited to help you convert cryptocurrencies, a wallet is better for storing and sending coins. With a wallet, you have full control over your coins, and you get to decide exactly when you want to move your coins and where you want to send them.

Understanding the Different Types of Wallets

A cryptocurrency wallet is a secure digital wallet where you store, send and receive your cryptocurrencies. Most coins have an official “core” wallet, usually issued by the same team that worked on the software of the coin itself. As secure as they are, these wallets can be very heavy. In computing terms, this means they contain a lot of data, which uses a lot of space on your hard drive and a lot of your computer’s resources. This is especially true for the Bitcoin core wallet, which contains a record of every single transaction ever confirmed by the Bitcoin blockchain!
If you just need to store your cryptocurrency, that is you’re not planning on trading them anytime soon, you should keep them in a cold wallet. A cold wallet stores cryptocurrency offline, completely disconnected from the internet. This reduces the hacking risk online, as it takes your coins off the exchanges and out of the cloud. With a cold wallet, you can keep receiving cryptocurrency, but you can’t send coins until it’s connected.
A hot wallet is connected to the internet for regular transactions. When comparing wallets, you can think of the hot wallet as the wallet that you carry around in your pocket or your checking account for daily transactions, while the cold wallet works as your long-term savings account or retirement plan.
  • Desktop Wallet: this is installed on your desktop computer and gives you access to and control over your wallet. This wallet is only accessible from the computer on which it is installed and offers a high level of security. However, it’s at risk if something happens to your computer. Examples of desktop wallets are Exodus, mSigna, and Copay.
  • Mobile Wallet: this is run from an app on your smartphone for the most convenient but most vulnerable option. These wallets need to be backed up securely; if you lose your phone, or it is compromised, you could lose your cryptos with it.
  • Online Wallet: this is a web-based wallet, which means that your data is stored on an online server, making it easier to access it from anywhere. However, since your private keys are stored online with this wallet, they are more at risk of hacking and theft. Examples of online wallets are Coinbase and Blockchain.
  • Hardware Wallet: wallets such as the Ledger Nano S and Trezor are built to specifically hold cryptocurrency and keep it secure. You can turn them into hot wallets by connecting them to your computer, then take it offline once you’re done. You don’t need a specialized device for a hardware wallet, even USB sticks will do.
  • Paper Wallet: the most basic form of a wallet involves a pen and paper. Simply write out your private key and you will be able to recover your wallet if you ever lose access to it. You can also print out a QR code for both your public and private key, which avoids storing data digitally, providing a high level of security.

Transaction Safety

Because of the irreversible nature of cryptocurrency transactions, it is very important to ensure that you have entered the correct wallet address. If you send coins to the wrong address, it may not be possible to recover it.
When using different cryptocurrencies, it is important to understand how they work before making transactions. Certain cryptocurrencies can have special requirements or safety precautions that should be taken. For example, with IOTA you should always use a new address when you send your cryptos, otherwise your security is reduced. With Ripple, there can sometimes be two parts to the address: a wallet address and a destination tag. If the proper destination tag is not included, the coins you send can be lost or end up in the wrong account.
Another risk to watch out for are trojans that have been detected lurking on people’s computers. When the victim copies a cryptocurrency address to send tokens, the trojan will swap the wallet ID that was copied for its own malicious wallet address in payment fields. Therefore, pay careful attention to the cryptocurrency address you are sending your cryptos to.

Other Threats

Phishing attacks, Ponzi schemes, and ransomware are all common types of cyber fraud and theft of cryptocurrencies. There have been reports of cybercriminals sending phishing emails with infected attachments that give the attacker access to the victim’s computer and their wallets. Always be vigilant when dealing with suspicious emails and attachments, especially when you are unsure of their source.
Also, pay attention to the exchanges you’re using. Make sure they’re reputable and secure. Follow the news and avoid those that experience many technical issues or have strange policies.
Lastly, spread the word and tell others about these security measures. If all participants in the crypto community pay attention and take their security seriously, the threat of cybercriminals will be reduced.

2018 Cryptocurrency Profile: Ripple

Image result for rippleIn this article, Ripple always refers to the company formerly known as Ripple Labs, Inc. The token native to the Ripple protocol is referred to as XRP or ripples.
Ah Ripple, the black sheep of crypto. Despite its success in funding rounds, adoption by major players in Fintech, and a breathtaking rise in the value of XRP, opinions about the currency still vary widely.
One of the main points of criticism comes from the centralized nature of the network due to validator selection, which means it does not rely on distributed actors to reach consensus. Despite this, XRP is one of the leading cryptocurrencies today. Ripple has seen success by concentrating on corporate adoption: the circulating supply of ripples surpasses $40B in market capitalization today.

RippleNet

Ripple, in an effort to create a global network of banks, payment providers and individuals, has released three products that form what is known as RippleNet: xCurrent, xRapid and xVia. Using these services, payments can be settled in multiple different forms (fiat, tokens and/or loyalty rewards, and cryptocurrencies) quickly and cheaply.
The main benefit of this technology is clear: it significantly lowers the cost to send and receive funds for both institutions and individuals compared to alternatives such as bank transfers. Due to the network’s efficiency and reliability, settling transactions is a consistent, pleasant experience.
Thanks to RippleNet’s centralized nature and the 4 seconds required for confirmation, Ripple processes transactions much faster and on a larger scale than most other crypto alternatives. RippleNet is able to process 1,500 transactions per second on a regular basis with a maximum limit of 50,000 transactions per second, comparable to credit payment giant VISA. This capacity puts it far ahead of Ripple’s competitors: Ethereum can handle about 1% of this load and Bitcoin 0.5%.

XRP Tokens

Often referred to simply as “Ripple,” XRP is the token native to RippleNet and is required to use xRapid, Ripple’s ‘low cost liquidity’ service, but not xCurrent or xVia (still in development). On xRapid, it is used as a currency and a mechanism to prevent spam, as accounts needs to have at least 20 ripples to send transactions on RippleNet so that they can pay the required fee to transmit transactions. It is a deflationary currency: all 100 billion ripples were minted at its creation and no more ripples will ever be produced. xRapid operations consume a small portion of XRP, diminishing the supply over time and increasing its value.
Ripples are also great at providing liquidity for banks and market makers. The strongest case for this liquidity is the ability to capitalize on currency corridors with very low volume, as it makes opening low-value channels economical, and thus expands their coverage and creates new opportunities.
Currently, the high volatility associated with cryptocurrencies is a discouraging factor for banks who would want to hold XRP assets. With its quick confirmation time lowering the risk of slippage, it’s possible for financial institutions to acquire tokens just before initiating a transaction and liquidating them once the transaction has been completed. If volatility decreases, holding pools of ripples will likely be beneficial as it negates the need for nostro accounts.
XRP can also be used by individuals through the official wallet and can almost entirely eliminate fees for transmitting money. Also, as with many cryptocurrencies at the moment, many individuals simply hold XRP as an investment, speculating that the value will increase. Since XRP can be traded on multiple popular exchanges, and has extremely quick confirmation time and minimal fees, it is a popular currency to transfer between exchanges.

Corporate Adoption

Since their first angel investment rounds in 2013 (back when it was OpenCoin), Ripple has experienced steady adoption from banking and fintech giants around the world, with many adopters choosing to go a step further and invest directly in the startup. The first institution using Ripple officially was German bank Fidor (now part of Groupe BCPE), but since then, many other institutions have joined up. Ripple’s flagship service, xCurrent, is especially popular with banks and fintech firms. Its messaging system and interledger protocol have been particularly useful.
As interest grew, Ripple developed the RippleNet Rulebook, along with the RippleNet Advisory Board. According to them: “The objective of the Rulebook is to create a legal framework that ensures optimal working relationships with all network participants and a seamless experience for the end user.”
RippleNet Advisory Board members:
At the moment, multiple pilot projects that include the use of xRapid are underway, including companies like Moneygram. Due to growing partnerships, Ripple has been described as a threat to companies like Western Union, which has since launched its own pilot program with Ripple. This level of corporate adoption is credited as one of the major reasons for the spectacular increase in the price of XRP token throughout 2017, especially during December.

Ripple Timeline

Ripple’s development has been clearly focused on making payments and remittances more efficient from the get-go. Here is a look at Ripple’s journey:
Payza Ripple Timeline
Despite being criticized for going against the decentralized ideal that spawned Bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies, Ripple and its token, XRP, have enjoyed success in terms of both corporate and individual investor adoption.

Crypto in 2018 ! The Need For Speed - Terabyte Blocks Be The Big Solution!

Image result for increase your prosperity in 2018It is pretty hard to understate what 2017 has meant for investors.
The S&P 500 had one of it best years in more than five appreciating
20% to a record near 2700.
The global economy continued to recover from the last vestige
of the 2008 financial crisis.
Everybody has the right to feel financially more secure.
But if you were for fortunate to be a crypto investor,
you have cause to celebrate like never before.
Bitcoin rewarded you with a 1660%+ price appreciation,
Ethereum gained a monster 10,200%+ while Litecoin turned in
a 6,500%+ price increase.
And these are just the majors.
Returns with some of the successful ICOs were even more spectacular.
Of course not every ICO paid off and some fell victim unscrupulous operators.
Nevertheless, 2017 was a golden year.
When prices increase as much as they have it is easy to get fixated solely
on price alone and forget about the underlying forces that represent true value.
So what will be the fundamental forced in 2018?

It is hard to know the future so far out
because it is evolving so quickly, but here are some thoughts on
several very important issues.

--------------The Need For Speed
Turning away from the ton of good things that happened in 2017,
there are the twin issues of slow speed and high transaction fees.

It is a thorny situation.
Each of us can appreciate the need to any system to be
successful has to be capable of scaling.
Appreciating the higher energy consumed can be a bit
more obtuse but it a big deal.
The promise of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin going back to the
beginning was “fast and free”
As the table below illustrates, transaction speeds are stalling
and falling short of the promise.
The high transaction costs for all cryptocurrencies is presently a major
deterrent to broader acceptance.

Depending on how you work the math, performing a transfer in bitcoin
can be more the using a fiat currency and using the traditional
banking system.
Presumably the solution to faster transaction speeds would be less energy
consumed which in turn would allow competition to drive down fees.
At present even 10-15 transactions per second is not nearly enough to
meet projected demand in the future.
Finding a solution is important to everyone from the major currencies like bitcoin,
Ethereum and Litecoin down to companies linked to each.

Some help for Ethereum may be on the way in 2018
when Casper is fully in action.
Casper changes the Ethereum verification process from
“Proof of Work” to “Proof of Stake”.
One of the issues Casper addresses is high-energy consumption.
Part of the issue spills over into security.
In order to maintain adequate security of Ethereum POW protocol involves very high operating costs.
Casper dramatically lowers these costs.

Experts who have deep knowledge of Casper claim that honest miners
will be able to cheaply validate while attackers somehow will still
face extremely high costs.

Casper addresses this problem.
In doing so, Casper puts Ethereum in a much stronger
position to serve the world.
The more users, the more demand for Ether and that, of course means
even more upward Ether price pressure.
And then there is the Ethereum Raiden Network.

This is Ethereum’s version of bitcoins Lightning Network.
The technical definition of Raiden is allowing off-chain scaling solutions for
performing so called ERC20-compliant token transfers
Raiden supposedly enables near-instant, low fee, scalable transactions.
The operative words here are off-chain scaling and privacy preserving.
This is an option to watch closely in 2018 to see if
Raiden can live up to some big promises.

----------------Could Terabyte Blocks Be The Big Solution
It is only a research paper but the founder of Lokad Joannes Vermorel
has come up with a possible answer by creating terabyte size blocks.
His idea has only focused on transactions for bitcoin cash but if it
works there you can bet that adaptations for other currencies will follow.

Joannes argues that terabyte blocks could not only be fast but economical.
He explains how terabyte blocks could scale to far more than the current
1MB blocks size or about 3-4 transactions per second.

According to his research paper a terabyte block could contain around 7 million
transactions per second.
That relates to 50 daily transactions for virtually every human on planet earth.
That promise alone is what makes Vermorel’s idea worth keeping an eye on.

How difficult it will be to translate Joannes idea into a real world application
and then be adapt to cryptocurrencies beyond bitcoin cash is anybody’s guess.

One thing is certain, transaction speed and costs are likely to be hot
topics in the New Year.

Remember, one of the original selling points of bitcoin was that
transactions were fast and free.

At present neither of these two promises are being consistently met.
Even so, the possibilities are so fascinating that it keeps our attention glued to
events that will shape the future.

Whatever 2018 brings we will share our views and hope your
prosperity continues.

Missed bitcoin boat cryptocurrencies might make rich alternatives ... So, if you feel like you missed the Bitcoin boat, here are some alternative ...

$750 Billion and Beyond...Crypto!! $700 billion for the first time

We are only four days into 2018, but the cryptocurrency market
has already achieved another major milestone as the total
value of digital assets surged past $700 billion for the first time.

Crypto Market Cap: Onward and Upward

The total value of all cryptocurrencies in circulation came within a
hair of $750 billion on Thursday, according to data provider CoinMarketCap.
At press time, the total market size was $749.9 billion,
which represents a daily increase of nearly 11%.

Just 24 hours ago, the market was capitalized at $678 billion,
a record high at the time.
vOver the last 12 months, cryptos have gone from an obscure
and esoteric concept to a mainstream investment attracting
institutional capital from around the world.

Over that period, the market cap has risen by an astounding 3,800%.

Altcoins Take a Bigger Share of the Pie

One of the most resounding features of the latest rally is the fact that
bitcoin played only a minor role.
Though still the largest cryptocurrency, bitcoin’s influence on the market
has quickly faded, with the likes of Ripple (XRP), Ethereum (ETH) and even Cardano (ADA)
controlling a bigger share of the overall pie.
At the time of writing, there were 35 cryptocurrencies with a market value
of $1 billion or more.

Three additional assets were valued at more than $900 million and 19
more had a cap of half at least half a billion.
For bitcoin, prices climbed back above $15,000 on Wednesday,
and were last seen hovering around $15,330.
The real story continues to be Ripple XRP, which briefly traded above $3 a token

Wednesday as traders rushed to capitalize on the best-performing currency of 2018.
(Interestingly, bitcoin held that titled in six of seven years through 2016.)

Recent gains in the market have also been driven by lesser known coins that analysts
say offer huge potential for the digital economy.

We’ve already mentioned Cardano – now the world’s no. 5 crypto by market cap –
but there’s also NEM (XEM), Stellar (XLM), IOTA (MIOTA) and Tron (TRX).
These altcoins are part of the top-11 cryptocurrencies by market cap.
As these tokens surge, bitcoin’s share of the total market has fallen to an
all-time low of 34.6%.
Ripple controls 16.6% of the market and Ethereum 12.7%.
Put differently, altcoins now represent two-thirds of the crypto universe.
The recent price rally suggests cryptos are picking up where they left off in 2017.

However, some analysts are concerned that evolving regulations could rain
on bull market’s parade.

Last week, South Korea became the latest country to issue stern warnings
about cryptocurrency speculation, with a government official warning that
major exchanges could get shut down if newly implemented
rules fail to cool the market.

The South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) has issued swift bans
on new trading accounts on domestic exchanges, and has barred anyone
from opening anonymous trading accounts.

The new rules come into effect this month, and follow earlier efforts to
restricted minors and non-residents from trading on
domestic cryptocurrency exchanges.

Hope this helps

Bitcoin Gold: What to Know About the Blockchain's Next Split

Image result for bitcoin gold
Anyone who owns bitcoin will soon be able to receive a new cryptocurrency.
As of block 491,407 on the bitcoin blockchain, another alternative version of the protocol will be launched, resulting in a variant that's being branded bitcoin gold (BTG).
The project, which seeks to improve bitcoin's technology by changing how its competition for rewards is conducted, is the second to launch since August via an increasingly common process called a "hard fork."
Readers may remember the term from the launch of bitcoin cash, the alternative version of the bitcoin protocol that spurred global headlines for unexpectedly creating billions of dollars in value, seemingly out of thin air.

Looking ahead, many industry observers are expecting the same results this time around, though there may be reasons for enthusiasm to be tempered.
What is bitcoin gold?

In short, bitcoin gold aims to achieve two goals:
First, bitcoin gold wants to change how mining works by making it so the most powerful mining machines (called ASICs) can no longer be used.
Second, by attracting more people to this system over time, it hopes to free the bitcoin network from the large companies that offer these products, and it argues, command undue influence on the network.

Instead of scaling bitcoin to support more users, bitcoin gold tweaks bitcoin in an effort to "make bitcoin decentralized again." This, proponents argue, will make the network, designed to offer an egalitarian way to send payments digitally around the globe, more accessible to users.

And while created via the same mechanism, bitcoin gold differs from bitcoin cash in a few ways, most notably in its distribution.

Differences include:
The bitcoin gold cryptocurrency is set to be created in advance (prior to the code being open-sourced to the public).
About 1 percent of the total cryptocurrency tokens mined before the blockchain goes public will be used to pay the bitcoin gold development team.
Once this distribution is over, the team claims it will launch the cryptocurrency so that users can redeem their coins.

Of course, while it aims to become the de-facto version of bitcoin, others might consider bitcoin gold an "altcoin" – the term has long been used to denote any cryptocurrency launched using bitcoin’s existing code, but that has an alternative market or use case.
Do I have bitcoin gold?

All bitcoin owners will receive the cryptocurrency at a rate of 1 BTC to 1 BTG, setting the stage for possible market activity.

But, that's not to say it's totally intuitive to retrieve.

One quirk is that it'll be easier to redeem the funds from wallets or exchanges that recognize the cryptocurrency. The easiest way, then, to retrieve the bitcoin gold is to move bitcoin to a wallet or exchange that supports bitcoin gold, or to hold bitcoin in a wallet where you own your private keys (rather than holding them with an exchange).

To date, 20 exchanges and wallets promise to support bitcoin gold once it launches, according to the project's website.

Although one of the most popular U.S.-based exchanges, Coinbase stated on October 20 that it does not support bitcoin gold due to skepticism about how developers have made project information available to others.

"At this time, Coinbase cannot support bitcoin gold because its developers have not made the code available to the public for review. This is a major security risk,” the post reads.

This is perhaps something to keep an eye on as the project progresses. Although the project will officially fork on Monday night, it's not yet open to anyone and everyone, and there’s still plenty left on the developers' to-do list.
Who is behind bitcoin gold?

The team behind the hard fork appears to be a relatively small group.

Hong Kong-based LightningAsic CEO Jack Liao, who's an outspoken critic of the state of bitcoin mining, first broached the idea of bitcoin gold back in July.

His company LightningAsic sells mining equipment, including GPUs, the type of computing hardware bitcoin gold is supposed to rely on.

Since first introduced earlier this summer, the team has expanded to include pseudonymous lead developer h4x3rotab, as well as a team of five other volunteers who are now working on developing and promoting the cryptocurrency in their spare time.

The project can be tracked on Github and on the community Slack group.
How do people feel about bitcoin gold?

All that said, for those interested in exploring or using bitcoin gold, it's worth noting that it has generated its share of controversy.

Satoshi Labs CEO Marek Palatinus, who launched bitcoin's first ever mining pool, is skeptical the project will actually work to decentralize mining as planned.

And he's not the only one to throw shade at the new project.

Bitcoin developer Rhett Creighton is working on alternative bitcoin gold "protest fork" software that seeks to pursue the same idea but without setting aside some of the new cryptocurrency for development.

If more than 51% of miners choose to use his software, the so-called pre-distribution to developers will be erased, he told CoinDesk. "It's up to the miners to decide what they want," he added.

All in all, it's unclear if business and mining groups will ultimately support the project, and if they do, how much value the alternative blockchain could create.

For example, while a list of roughly 50 businesses and miners support the so-called Segwit2x fork, similar support hasn't been seen for bitcoin gold. Likewise, though bitcoin cash began with support from vocal miners and exchanges, bitcoin gold has arguably yet to benefit from such early activity.

Bitcoin Price Reaching $10k by April 2018 ‘No Surprise’: Mike Novogratz

Investor turned crypto hedge fund mogul Mike Novogratz has predicted Bitcoin will balloon to $10,000 in just six months.

Speaking on CNBC Wednesday, Novogratz, who is publicly bullish on Bitcoin and is starting a dedicated $500 million hedge fund, said he could “see the herd coming.”

“I’m pretty confident to say it’s going higher,” he told host [] on the network’s Fast Money segment.

“...It would not surprise if in the next six to 10 months we’re over $10,000.”

Asked whether he thought Bitcoin was therefore a bubble, Novogratz said the “Blockchain revolution,” like railways and the Internet, would “change the way we live.”

“Yes, it’s a bubble, it’s going to be one of the great manias of all time,” he continued.

“Bitcoin happens to be the bellwether of this entire decentralized revolution, so it’s the easiest way people get gain exposure to it… Things like Ethereum I think will be the public utility of this new space.”
Signs of stability

Bitcoin prices remained relatively stable around all-time highs Wednesday, despite news that Russia was preparing to block access to cryptocurrency exchanges for its citizens.

Showing increasing resilience to political maneuvering, Bitcoin has managed to shake off wider-reaching moves by China, which saw an exchange ban and a halt on ICO operations in the country.

Bitcoin Price to Reach $6,000 in 2018, Predicts Wall Street Strategist

The bitcoin price pulled back from its all-time high this weekend, weighed down by abitcoin cash price surge and disagreements over the SegWit2x scaling proposal.

However, Wall Street strategist Tom Lee believes that the long-term prospects of the bitcoin price remain quite promising. As CNBC reports, Lee–who co-founded Fundstrat Global Advisors and is bearish on the outlook for the stock market–wrote a note to clients establishing a mid-2018 bitcoin price target of $6,000. He also forecasts that it could rise as high as $25,000 by 2022.

Bitcoin Price to Reach $6,000 in 2018

He says several factors will fuel bitcoin’s continued rise to $6,000, including a 50% increase public adoption of bitcoin as a store of value and mainstream financial investments in cryptocurrency:

We see bitcoin as gaining from institutional sponsorship, improving transaction platforms and ultimately, greater public adoption.

Pointing to LedgerX and CBOE Holdings, which have both receive regulatory approval, Lee says the availability of cryptocurrency options and futures trading will increase overall bitcoin transaction volume.

[This] implies significant rise [in] institutional holdings of Bitcoin in next 6-8 months given recent approvals….No doubt, this will lead to an increase in overall transaction volumes for bitcoin.

Central Banks Could Acquire Bitcoin

Lee’s comments echo a recent Goldman Sachs note, which advised that it is “getting harder” for institutional investors to ignore cryptocurrencies. He adds that even central banks may begin acquiring bitcoin if it reaches a market cap of $500 billion, which will happen if the bitcoin price reaches about $30,000.

While one may say this is preposterous to say central banks would own bitcoin — we believe that Central banks would view crypto currencies differently if Bitcoin’s aggregate value exceeded $500 billion

That said, Lee anticipates short-term volatility for the bitcoin price heading into late August of this year.

Short-term traders should be prepared for another volatile consolidation period heading into late August given the XBT is nearing our next resistance levels with daily/short-term momentum becoming overbought.

Other Bitcoin Price Forecasts

A number of financial analysts have issued bitcoin price forecasts. Sheba Jafari, a chief technical analyst at Goldman Sachs, believes the bitcoin price will near $5,000 but crash as low as $2,221 as its fifth wave ends. Stock researcher Ronnie Moas believes bitcoin will beat Lee’s target and cross $7,500 in 2018, and one Harvard academic believes a unique application of Moore’s Law could result in bitcoin breaking through $100,000 in 2021.
