How To Protect Your Blog From Getting Hacked

Believe it or not, there's someone out there right now trying to hack into your blog. Yes, from the top bloggers with thousands of subscribers to that Cooking with Coconut project you started in college, someone is trying to break in.

You might be saying, "That's ridiculous, what are they going to do? Steal my Halloween recipe for Co-Co-Crunch chips?" Maybe. But most likely not.

No, these hackers have much bigger fish to fry. After all, your blog has access to not just your personal information, but also any collaborators you've worked with (making all parties susceptible to phishing schemes, amongst other risks). There's also the potential of stealing any information from your subscriber's lists as well. And finally, let's not forget that some hackers can steal power off your host.

While there's a fair amount of information to possibly take, there are also people working every day to prevent it from happening. But make no mistake…you have to do your part too. Below we've listed a few helpful tips on how to keep your blog from being hacked:

Change Your Passwords (but not too regularly)

We've all heard before that it's important to change your passwords regularly. In fact, some employers make their employees automatically change them in 30/60/90 day increments. However, this isn’t necessarily always the best practice.

As Steve Ranger notes in Changing Your Password Regularly is a Terrible Idea, and here's why

"If users are forced to change passwords they will mostly choose something that is a slight variation on the original one, or one that they have used elsewhere, or a weaker one. These behaviors can be exploited," CESG said: "attackers can often work out the new password, if they have the old one."

I can say with a safe bet that most of us are guilty of this. It's just too hard to come up with a new password that's entirely different from our initial one but is still memorable. More so, this practice could potentially leave your passwords more vulnerable than you initially thought by writing it down or saving it to a 3rd party app, both of which are susceptible to theft.

With all this being said, it's important to note that it's still critical to change your passwords and have them vary between personal, financial, communication, and business accounts. Even still, take a portion of time to hash out combinations you can genuinely remember.

Finally, seek out services that monitor login information. This can be one of the best practices to prevent hacking as these services send a notification with any unfamiliar login attempts.

If you're sharing content with a team, lock it up

As cyber security firm Carbon Black notes, hackers are getting more sophisticated with their attacks. By utilizing common file formats shared on collaborative clouds, phishing schemes are on the rise to get after entire teams of collaborators.

However, while major services like Google have tirelessly made their cloud collaboration efforts ironclad tight, teams that are using private/local servers are still considerably at a huge risk. To combat this trend, companies like Fire Eye are creating protection for shared content systems that you can check out here.

Beware of Extensions

Extensions from different services can help us when we need to check sources or our grammar, as well as serve other utilities for our blog. However, sometimes we overlook if these extensions are legit and if they are, how vulnerable they are cyber threats.

Attacks in this manner have in the past been able to use malicious software that's signed and distributed through a network by acting as the extension you initially intended on installing. While this doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't be using extensions at all, be mindful to check and see if what the source is, as well as the terms of their user agreement. Some extensions have a pretty open-ended policy that allows over time for more malicious attempts when the user-base expands.

Final Thoughts

No matter the audience of your blog, it's important to remember that the size is irrelevant in comparison to the impact an attack on it could hold. Your blog is linked to an entire network of others, filled most likely the same personal information you have too. More, your readers trust you to keep their information safe, which is a big responsibility.

Your blog is home to your personal ideas, opinions, and thoughts…and that should be the only thing 'personal' that gets out.

How To Maximize Your Content's Reach

Today, even the largest organizations and companies struggle with creating successful content marketing strategies. So of course, it’s no surprise that a business with a strict budget and minimal resources can find themselves facing an uphill battle when it comes to creating a solid content marketing strategy.

When it comes to content marketing, creating content can be a challenge in itself. The real challenge, however, comes with what you do with the content after it’s been published. A good publishing strategy is what determines the success of any content marketing effort. When factors like budget get in the way, the key is to tactfully maneuver available resources and create a smarter distribution strategy that will align with your needs. This will ensures that you're getting the most use out of your content efforts without burning a hole through your pocket.

If you're looking for the best way to utilize your resources and improve your content marketing strategy, here are 3 low-cost distribution tactics that can help:

Establish Syndication Ties

To reach a larger audience on a budget, get your content syndicated with popular publishers or social influencers within your industry. These channels will allow you to share content to their audiences. There’s no sure-fire way to promise a syndication partnership with a major publisher, but a few strategies can help you pitch your content.

Start by identifying publishers who publish content that aligns with your target market’s interests and then develop content that aligns with the desires of both audiences. A tech company could write a detailed article about their industry that would appeal to the interests of platforms such as The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur, and Forbes.

Be sure to establish a rapport with editors before beginning your conversation with a request for a favor. Instead, work to show what value you can provide them to help reach their goals. This approach will help you to establish long-term relationships with these editors. As you move forward, share your content with an editor from the desired publisher and give them the rights to republish the content to their readers.

Go For Low-Cost Paid Promotions

Organic reach and engagement metrics on social media are increasingly becoming underwhelming. These days, simply promoting content on social channels is not enough to build an engaged audience, drive conversions, and/or meet key marketing benchmarks. So if you find yourself limited by a tight budget, you ought to consider using paid adverts to promote your content, especially when it comes to content that consistently drives revenue or create sales opportunities.

Start by experimenting with Facebook ads or Pinterest promoted pins to determine which tactics will help you to fulfill your business goals and align with your budget concerns. Both platforms have been proven to drive results for business of all sizes and industries. Be sure to use a limited budget across all of your advertising platforms to keep financial risk at a minimum. This will help you to focus on establishing methods to measure the effectiveness of your advertising campaigns. This will help you to understand which channels will be the most effective for your business while preventing you from blowing through your budget all at once. As soon as you find a strategy that produces positive returns, scale your efforts.

Curate Content That Is Relevant

Crafting content can get pricey relatively quickly sometimes. Most businesses with limited budgets often struggle to push original content across all of their networks on a regular basis. This problem often results in gaps to editorial calendars and more often than not, leads to missed opportunities of engagement with their audience. To ensure you close any gaps in your content strategy, consider curating or republishing content from industry thought leaders, social influencers, your customers or even content from other businesses within your space. Always be sure that this content is in alignment with the interests of your customer base and done sparingly. Ensure that your site has has more original content than ones that are curated. Remember, your audience wants to be fed original content.

Adding a content curation strategy to your marketing efforts can help you create a consistent stream of relevant content to share with your audience without the financial effects that come with producing original content daily. It’s an effective technique for filling the gaps in your calendar and establishing relationships within your industry.

How to Generate Substantial Leads From Your Blog

Many businesses have a blog on their page. However, unless you utilize it properly and effectively, it won't bring you the results you need. If given proper attention, your blog can be a vital - and inexpensive - tool in your digital marketing toolbox.

Here are three tips to generate leads using your blog:

Create Unique and Valuable Content

As always, you will need a strong content marketing strategy that provides consistent, current, and relevant material. More than anything, you’ll need to create unique, valuable, and interesting content for readers in order to generate an audience, leads, and revenue. Authentic, related content is the most valuable to not only your users, but also search engines.

If you want to impress your users and improve your SEO, you'll want to create unique and valuable content on a regular basis. This will help gain interest, get your readers coming back, and engage them in the material that you produce. It will help them remember you and come back, choosing you as their source in the future. Once you’ve developed some loyalty and authority with them, they will become converting customers. In order to do this though, you’ll need to give them something that they actually want and appreciate.

Comment, Like, and Share

You should be creating content that is shareable and will motivate people to like and comment on it. This will help it spread, growing your audience, traffic, and conversions; it’s also probably the most important thing to do when trying to generate leads.

It will get you spread across multiple channels and to the most amount of users. More than likely, you’ll end up drawing in people that are interested in the same things through being spread among users that are interested in your content. There friends will see it, and it will spread from one to another, drawing in any one interested in what you offer.

More than just having people like and share your material, you want to make them respond to it! Create blog posts that make your readers respond to what you’re writing, getting them active with your content and your business. This will get them returning to your page and help build confidence in your audience and customers. In turn, this will establish you as a knowledgeable authority on the subject.

More than anything, you should try to make them want to come back for the next blog you write!

Guest Blogging

Writing blogs for other pages and blogs is a great way of spreading your content across other communities. If you pick the right pages (within your niche) you can generate a lot of traffic already interested in your niche, and therefore more likely to be a converting customer for your business. A guest blog not only lets you connect with a community that may be interested in what you offer, but it also gives you a chance to directly tell them what you offer! By tapping into relevant pages for guest posts, you’ll draw in an audience and traffic that is related to your services and products, helping you gain loyal customers that will convert and buy.

By using these 3 basic tips to blogging, you should be able to make your blog an effective part of your digital marketing strategy. This will help you draw in an audience, increase your traffic, and improve your conversions.

How To Use Google Analytics

How To Use Google Analytics

What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is an online tool that assists in collecting detailed data about website visitors. Once the Google analytics script is added to website source code, it is possible to track website traffic, traffic sources, as well as conversion rates and sales. Google Analytics is mainly designed to aid marketers and webmasters. As a basic service, it is available for free. The advanced version is available for some monthly fee. Advanced version provides many additional information than the basic version. Website owner must allow Google Analytics cookies in order to collect information.

How Google Analytics can help?

Google Analytics tool helps to track AdWords campaign and also to boost online marketing campaigns. Once a person has visits a website, Google analytics tool uses access logs to store visitors data on the server. The information is then analyzed in a particular way once it has been stored. Part of the information includes the time and date of visit, the browser type on the visitor’s end, and the operating system, just to mention a few.

Google Analytics tool has been applied to determine the number of visitors coming to a site. But this is just one feature that may not reveal what people do once they come to the site. Thus, it becomes necessary to track the pages they visit once they land on the website.

Online advertisements and marketing campaigns can be tracked through Google Analytics tool. Thanks to its ability to track visitor’s path through HTTP connections. People who know more about HTTP connections understand that it is simply a way through which computers communicate with each other.

Google Analytics can also help people calculate the following:
  • Visit depth
  • Bounce rates
  • Repeat visitors
  • Bounce rates
  • Website loyalty, among other things
  • Lead generation
  • Sales
Google Analytics works for SEO because it is easy to use. It is possible to define a range of data when viewing statistics in different categories. Webmaster can navigate from general to more specific data on the tool. Google analytics also shows from where the visitors came from. Which also includes the Keywords they have used to find the site. This particular option is very important to rank higher in search engines for any particular keyword. However, the most important contribution of Google Analytics in Seo is to help website owners improve their marketing campaigns, advertisements and website visits by using statistics.

Google provides an improved version of Google Analytics tool, which can track even short activities on a particular website. It also loads faster. It is called Real time data. You can access visitors flow, number of visitors on site and many other useful data in real time using this new feature. It is possible to see where visitors are coming from, where they arrive and at what point they leave. Thus, by paying attention to each of the pages, webmaster can make necessary adjustments. This would result to more sales or conversion rates.

From the above discussion we can come to the conclusion that Google analytics has made the life of webmasters and marketers more easier. Read more information on Google Analytics here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Analytics

How To Optimize Your WordPress Blog For Speed?

How To Optimize Your WordPress Blog For Speed?
There are over 60million websites currently using the WordPress platform and content management system (CMS). This number includes sites hosted on the actual WordPress site, as well as those that use external web hosting but continue to use the WordPress CMS.

Despite there being hundreds of custom WordPress themes, plug-ins, applications, and various other features that users can take advantage of to make their site unique, the fact remains that most of the time, it is extremely easy to tell if as site is a WordPress site or not. If it is, then there is nothing wrong with that. However, all site owners, not just WordPress customers, are always looking to have the quickest, best performing site possible.

The Power of Speed:

Various pieces of research suggest that three seconds is how long your site and its pages should be taking to load. Given that different research has shown top sites like Amazon and eBay to fall well outside that, we’ll take that with a pinch of salt. At the same time, you have to know that big brands are going to be given more slack by browsers. If your small business WordPress site is slow, there’ll be no sympathy.

Here are some tips for speeding it up.

Look at Your Server:

Is your site on a U.S. based server, but you’re actually targeting browsers in the UK? If so, you’re experiencing a familiar problem, one that is slowing down your site and undermining your objectives massively.

Ensure your server is based where the majority of your customers are, so that they’re getting the experience they should be whenever they head to your site.

Compress All Images:

Some guides such as this one are saying, “Remove your images,” but where would the sense in that be when web design is focused on visuals more than ever?

If you’re using your website for blogging, images will make it more engaging and attractive, too.

The answer is simple: keep the images, but compress them, before you upload them. You do this because even if your site automatically reduces the actual size, the file size remains the same. Image Optimizer is a great tool for doing this, and can reduce file size by up to 80%.

Minify:

Using Minify in addition to compressing images yourself will make your site even quicker, as it streamlines everything so your server can load it quicker.

A note of caution, however; don’t believe that, because you’re using Minify, that it is okay to load up your site with heavy functions and applications. All that will do is give back the performance gains you’ve earned, and possibly make your site even more of an ordeal for browsers. Rather than seeing Minify as an opportunity to make your site more complex, see it as your chance to make a simple site even better.

Take Advantage of the Cache:

You’ll need to use a WordPress caching plug-in for this feature, but it’ll take a significant chunk of time off your page loading times. Caching works by storing your data externally, so that repeat users can get data from there rather than having to put pressure on your server each time they land on your site. If you have static web content, this will massively reduce loading times of pages, and your servers’ workload, as browsers will just get the same data repeatedly from the cache.

The Big Impact:

If you put all of these ideas into practice together, you can expect to see an improvement in page loading times of up to 65%. In a world where time really is money and people want data immediately, can you afford not to be doing more to get your important information in front of your customers’ eyes quicker?

Simple Solution for Wordpress Contact Form Problem

Wordpress Contact Form Problem
Every business knows the importance of good communication with their customers. That's why the Wordpress contact form plugin is one of the simplest, yet most valuable enhancements you could make to a company's website. Having a form that allows you to receive submissions via email allows a business to capture leads, generate revenue, and receive customer feedback. If this form is not configured properly, and you aren't receiving these emails, your company could be losing out on valuable business and creating a negative customer service experience for visitors to the site. Let's examine a common problem involving the Wordpress contact form, and walk through the steps of the solution.

When form submissions are sent to you through your business's website, the emails are usually sent through the server on which the website is hosted. If the IP address for this server has been associated with spam-related activity in the past, it might be automatically blacklisted by your email server. Therefore, the form submissions would go straight to your spam folder, and you would never see them.

Fortunately, this situation doesn't require you to change your hosting provider. Switching to another provider isn't a guaranteed solution anyway, as a new provider's IP address could easily be blacklisted in the future, causing the same problems to occur with your form. Instead, Wordpress can be configured to send your email out via a different, trusted IP address.

The first step in doing this involves downloading and installing the WP Mail SMTP plugin on your website. This plugin reconfigures Wordpress's mail function to using the SMTP protocol instead of mail(), and provides the website owner with more options for specifying an alternate host for sending mail.

Before selecting an alternate host, you must first confirm that this new IP address is trusted. To accomplish this, you can use a domain's Sender Policy Framework (SPF) record. The SPF record is a published list of IP addresses for a particular domain that are authorized to send email. A couple of recommendations for trusted hosts include AuthSMTP and Amazon SES.

Once you've configured the mail plugin and set up a trusted SMTP host, the final step is to test the form. Send test messages to yourself in the same way that a customer would, and verify that you receive the emails. If the emails arrive successfully, the solution has worked and you should see increased customer communication immediately!

How To Buy An Unavailable Domain?

What is an unavailable domain and how do you buy one? Very often, when you search for a domain name that you want you will find that someone already owns it. This is a very common occurrence, especially if you are looking for a .com domain name. Not only are many of these bought up for websites, many domain investors have gobbled up desirable .com domain names.

Just because a domain name is not immediately available, however, doesn't necessarily mean you cannot buy it. There are other ways to obtain it. Most domain registrars have a service where they help you obtain a domain name that's already owned. There is no guarantee that this will work, but if you really want a domain it's worth trying.

Domain Buy Service:

If you go to GoDaddy.com, for example, and search for a domain name you may find that it's already registered. In this case, GoDaddy will show you other options that may not be registered. They will also offer to help you obtain the domain for which you originally searched.

If you click on this option, you will see that they have a Domain Buy Service that currently costs $69.99 per domain plus commission. In exchange for this fee, GoDaddy will contact the domain's current owner and negotiate on your behalf. Naturally, it's in the domain registrar's interest to get the domain for you, as they will earn a commission on the sale (read this Namecheap review by Domain Raccoon for more services).

You should, however, only do this for a domain you really want and that has good earning potential. The cost of getting a domain in this manner can be substantial. You are not only paying the registrar for the service, but you don't know how much the current owner may want for the domain -- if he or she is even willing to sell it at all.

Domain Back Orders:

Another option is to back order the domain you want. In this case, you only have a chance to get this domain if the current owner does not renew it. Even then, you may have competition if other people have also back ordered it. In this case, it goes to auction and you will be able to bid against others.

When it comes to expired domains, you should also know that domains don't become available immediately after the expiration date. The current owner has a grace period of 40 days. During this time the owner can still renew it. This means that even if a domain is about to expire immediately, you will still have to wait more than a month before you have a chance to buy it.

Another way to get a domain that will soon expire is to register for a service such as Snapnames.com. This company and a few others like it will buy a name on your behalf as soon as it becomes available. You will have to pay them a fee, currently $69, and they will try to secure it for you. If others also want it, however, it will go to auction.

Using a service like Snapnames gives you a better chance of getting an expired domain than if you tried to register it yourself after it expires. Still, there is never a guarantee.

Contacting Domain Owners Directly:

Another way to get an unavailable domain name is to contact the owner directly. The owner may not respond to you at all. He or she may quote you a price higher than you're willing to pay. On the other hand, there's always a chance you will be lucky and find that the owner is willing to sell at a price you can afford.
If the domain has a website associated with it, you can often find the owner's contact information on the site. Keep in mind that if the site is well developed, this will probably drive up the domain's value. If there is no website, you can find contact info for the owner at Whois, unless the owner opted for domain privacy.

How to Find a Reliable Web Hosting Partner [Infographic]

Your website or blog is as good as the webhost that powers it. A web host is as important to your blog/website as an engine is for a vehicle. It usually is the factor that dictates whether your website can offer a predominantly positive or a lousy user experience. And if we’re not careful, we might fall for those web hosting companies that are only good at doing marketing stunts, but doesn’t focus on their service’s dependability at all. I’ll admit that in the beginning, I too fell victim to those hosts that offer domains for less than $5 a month. Over time though, I have smartened up. I finally realized that the errors and the frequency of slow loading time they’re causing my site is losing far more money than I’m saving.

If you’re currently on that dilemma, where you’re just starting to see how badly you’re mistaken in your selection. Then you have to add ‘seamless transition’ as one of the benefits of the web hosting company you’re going to switch to. On this infographic, you should consider other important factors you should be looking for in a web host.

How To Move Your Blogspot Blog To Your Own Domain

If you own a blogger, someone is hosting your website for you. Unless you own your own server, all the pictures, videos, songs and other content on your blog are stored elsewhere on a machine constantly running so the files are always available.
Some successful bloggers do get their own servers because the amount of control over their own work is that much greater. If you find yourself ready to host your own blog but you don’t know how to move it to your own domain, you’re in luck. Here’s how you can move a Blogspot blog to your own domain.

First, Have a Domain

You will need your own domain or some host besides Blogspot if you want to move your blog to the former from the latter. The list of these providers is a lengthy one but companies like GoDaddy are especially popular.
Once you’ve figured out what provider you want to go with, you’ll need to get all set up and everything. Before you move y our Blogspot blog, log into your account at whatever place is hosting your domain, or get your personal server ready for some new information.

Prepare It

Once you’re all set to move things over, you must prepare your domain to accept the requests which will come from Blogspot. To do this is a little complicated but easy enough with some directions. You will need to look for the Domain Control Center on your page.
If you can find it, then you’ll need to look for Total DNS Control. This is where you will add a new CNAME based on the URL you provide. It’s only a small adjustment you need to make so don’t worry about big changes here. It’s not much work at all.

Change Settings on Blogspot

Now you’ll need to go to your Blogspot account and prepare it to send the information over to your personal domain. This is a small, short and sweet process about as simple as the prior step. Once you’re logged in on your Blogspot, Go to your settings and re-confirm them with the new information and address you specified to make sure your blog is going to the right page and you’re done.
No muss, no fuss, you won’t even have to break a sweat to get this done. Beware though, there are some consequences to moving your blog from Google to your personal place.

Backlinks Will Be Lost

This is a big deterrent to established bloggers who wish to split up and make their own name. Any backlinks you’ve made will all become irrelevant as they’ll be linking to a website which doesn’t exist. The updates would take you an awful long time if you have a lot of links already, so this move is recommended only for fresh or experienced bloggers starting with something new.
You could keep making money on your Blogspot blog while making another one with your name somewhere else, right? There’s no need to ruin a good thing.

Tips To Avoid "Bad" Manners While Blogging

Tips To Avoid "Bad" Manners While Blogging

Blogging, the hottest trend in online publishing right now, is currently spreading like wildfire across the Internet.

A cross between an online journal and a bulletin board, everyone from rock starts, politicians, business leaders and your average "Joe" or "Jane" can instantly become a center of influence online using blogs.

But, as with any social interaction, certain rules apply (my grandma calls them manners) in order to be viewed as behaving "properly".

One of the things that gives blogging such strong appeal as an online publishing method revolves around "comments".

Blogs that allow "comments" enable readers to respond and elaborate on the information posted by the blog owner.

These comments and the free exchange of information, opinions, links, and new ideas creates the dynamic and growing content that makes blogging such a popular online activity for both publishers and readers.

However, rules and unwritten customs about the proper use of "comments" on a specific blog are also where most of the problems and controversy will arise.

Since a successful blog eventually becomes a community of people (albeit in cyberspace), proper social behavior is critical to be an effective and accepted member of the community.

Keep these basic rules in mind when approaching a new blog that allows commenting by readers so you won't find yourself on the wrong end of a scolding by people who operate with a different set of rules than you.

As with any social circle, violating the group's rules and customs will instantly cause a negative backlash.

Keep It Relevant:

Stay on topic with the post you're commenting about in a blog.

Nothing will earn you the wrath and disdain of your fellow posters and the blog owner faster than posting an off-topic comment.

Watch What Others Do:

Different blogs operate under different rules. What rates acceptable in one blog would earn you a verbal thrashing in another.

Before posting (especially if you have not posted to a specific blog before), look to see the types and quality of posts others make regularly.

  • Are they long or short?
  • Do they contain a link to the person's website?
  • Is there a "signature" under their name?

Be Polite:

It's fine to disagree with people when making a comment, whether it's the blog's author or a comment made by another reader.

It is not, however, acceptable to launch a personal attack on anyone or make nasty comments in someone else's blog.

If you feel the need to do so, do it in your own blog.

It's the same principle of you can say whatever you want in your own house, but when you're in someone else's house, you act right (and better than you do at home).

You Can't Respond To Everyone:

If you operate a blog and someone asks a question, try to respond, but both sides should understand that you can't respond 100% of the time.

We all get busy and a blog, unless it maintains a paid membership, is often supported as a labor of love.
